Greene County voters will decide whether to authorize a dedicated local sales tax for new school construction and major school renovations.
What your vote decides
A dedicated way to invest in Greene County schools
A “yes” vote authorizes Greene County to levy a retail sales tax of no more than one percentage point. By law and by the ballot language, the revenue can be used only for qualifying school capital projects—including related bond and loan financing costs.
Voters decide
The referendum puts the choice directly in the hands of Greene County voters at the November 2026 general election.
Funds are restricted
Revenue is legally limited to new school construction, major renovation, and associated financing costs—not general operating expenses.
The tax sunsets
The authority is not permanent. The ballot states that the tax would expire on June 30, 2046.
Why plan for a new school?
New homes mean more students to plan for
A July 2026 study prepared for Greene County Public Schools examined planned and proposed housing developments and the students they may bring. It gives the county a concrete reason to plan classroom space before those neighborhoods are complete.
2,753 homes
Housing units identified across developments at different stages of construction and planning.
About 1,666 students
Estimated K–12 students associated with those developments, based on student yields in comparable neighborhoods.
About 769 in K–5
The study's elementary-grade estimate shows why space for younger students deserves particular attention.
These are planning estimates, not a count of students newly entering the division. Some families may move from elsewhere in Greene County, and projects may change or take years to finish. The study does not measure current school capacity or determine the size or timing of a new school. It does show why Greene County should prepare for growth; the proposed sales tax could support qualifying new construction and major renovations.

What does 1% mean?
One penny for every taxable dollar
For purchases subject to the additional tax, the impact is straightforward. Visitors and commuters who shop in Greene County would contribute alongside residents.
